Putting Patients at Ease Through Signage

Nobody enjoys visiting the doctor. One of the challenges in designing a healthcare facility is creating a space that is pleasant, comforting, and relaxing for people who don’t want to be there. By thoughtfully selecting the right colors, themes, and signage for your facility’s décor, you can help patients feel less nervous and stressed before and during their appointment.

If your facility is large, the first essential step is to provide wayfinding signs throughout the facility, from the parking lot to the entrances, and then inside the facility so customers can find where they need to go. This one action can instantly reduce a patient’s annoyance and frustration with having to find their way around an unfamiliar environment when they are already anxious about their medical appointment.

As patients enter the lobby, greet them with a large reception sign to provide a feeling of assurance and give them confidence in the medical staff. Paint the walls with a soothing color, such as a neutral wood color; green, to evoke a sense of nature; or blue, which is known to create a sense of calm. Sofas, chairs, tables and other furniture should complement the wall color to create an inviting and calming atmosphere for your patients.

In your exam rooms, consider using wall graphics to create calming, yet graphically interesting motifs to distract your patients while they wait for the doctor. Some options to consider are seascapes, a rainforest, a field of wildflowers or a unique geometric pattern. In fact, you could create each room with a different motif to make it more interesting for patients who have follow-up appointments.

For rooms where patients will be lying down for the bulk of the visit, such as a room with an MRI machine or a dental office, consider installing ceiling graphics above the patient, such as a skyscape, to give the patient something to focus on other than the procedure. Similarly, for rooms designed for pediatric patients, include ceiling graphics of cartoons above the table they will be lying on.

Effective signage can help transform your healthcare facility into a warm, inviting area that helps put patients at ease before, during, and after their procedure.
