Should You Upgrade Your Old Neon Signs to LED?

Neon signs have been around for over 100 years and have several benefits. They can be customized to create any color and image to fit your business. They are highly visible at night, even in stormy or foggy conditions. However, since the 1990s, LED signs have been steadily overtaking neon signs and are currently the dominant type of signage. Should your business upgrade its signage to LED?

How Neon and LED Signs Work

Neon signs work by creating customized glass tubing and filling them with either neon, argon, mercury, helium, or krypton gasses. Each specific type of gas or combination of gasses create a different color. The tubes and gasses are heated with electricity and the heated gasses create the color and light you see in the signage. In contrast, LED signs are lit by the movement of electrons through a semiconductor. This movement can create any visible color of light and does not create heat, unlike neon and other traditional lights.

Why So Many Businesses Have Switched to LED

LED lights have several benefits over traditional neon signs:

The gasses in neon signs, particularly mercury, can be hazardous to your health if the tube breaks and a customer or employee comes in contact with it. While this has a low risk of occurrence, why take the risk at all if there is a safer alternative? Similarly, the gasses need to be periodically replenished by a professional trained to safely handle them, adding in maintenance costs.

Since neon signs are activated by heat, they use up significantly more energy than LED signs. In some cases, switching from neon to LED signs can save your sign energy consumption by as much as 70%. Similarly, if your signs are located indoors, using a LED sign instead of a neon one can reduce your air conditioning bill due to the reduced heat output.

LED lights have an incredibly long lifespan – some can last a decade or longer, making maintenance a non-issue.

LED lights have a more modern look. Similar to neon, they can be created in any size or image that your business would like. In fact, at Sign Partners, all of our lit channel letter signs feature LED light.
